Project Description

In April 2013, students from the Mayne Island School and the Galiano Island School explored shadow puppetry using overhead projectors and 2-D puppets on sticks to create original shadow plays. These plays were presented at the 1st Annual Gulf Islands Shadow Festival where students from both schools presented to each other, travelling across islands. They were also treated to special professional shadow puppet performances by Mind of a Snail Puppet Co. and Lost & Found Puppet Co. as well as taking part in short demo puppet workshops facilitated by these artists. When the students and teachers engaged with the artists they realized that they had only just begun to scratch the surface of exploring the shadows.

In the spring of 2014 (with funding support from ArtStarts), students from the Phoenix School, Saltspring Elememtary, and Mayne Island Elementary schools engaged in a series of shadow puppet workshops offered by both Lost & Found and Mind of a Snail puppet companies in collaboration. Students played games, explored shadow puppetry techniques, created their own stories, puppets, shadow masks, sounds, and presented their shows to the public. All these efforts were based on the theme of "Dreams".
